Updated August 2026 · Based on current KT, SK Telecom, LG U+ and Korea Tourism Organization information
Choosing a Korea eSIM in 2026 is less about finding one universally “best” carrier and more about choosing the right type of service for your trip.
For many tourists, a data-only eSIM is enough for maps, messaging, translation, bookings, social media, and normal internet use.
Other travelers specifically need:
- a Korean 010 phone number
- incoming or outgoing calls
- SMS
- help receiving simple verification messages from some travel services
- airport support if something goes wrong
Those needs can change which product makes the most sense.
The most important warning is this:
A Korean 010 phone number is not the same thing as full Korean identity verification.
A short-term tourist eSIM may provide a Korean number or support certain calls and texts, but that does not mean it will work for Korean banking, government services, payment verification, or other resident-level identity systems.
Korea eSIM 2026: Quick Answer
For most short-term tourists, start with what you actually need.
| What You Need | Best Starting Point |
|---|---|
| Maps, messaging, translation and internet | Data-focused eSIM |
| Outgoing Korean calls or texts | Product specifically supporting Voice/SMS |
| A Korean 010 number | Check the exact product, not just the carrier |
| Simple SMS from some travel services | Voice/SMS-capable product may help |
| Banking or government identity verification | Do not rely on a tourist eSIM |
| No airport-counter setup | Compare online-purchasable data eSIMs |
| Staff help with setup or verification | Airport carrier counter can be useful |
For most tourists who only need internet, a data-focused eSIM is the simplest choice.
Do not pay for additional phone features unless you know you will use them.

Airalo vs Yesim: Simple Online eSIM Alternatives
If you only need mobile data for maps, messaging, translation, bookings, social media, and normal internet use, you do not necessarily need a Korean carrier product with a local phone number.
Two online alternatives worth comparing are Airalo and Yesim.
Both are better suited to travelers who mainly want data rather than Korean call, SMS, or identity-verification features.
Airalo
Airalo currently offers South Korea data eSIMs with both fixed-data and unlimited options.
It can be a good starting point if you want:
- a simple online purchase before your trip
- fixed-data or unlimited plan choices
- app-based eSIM management
- a data-focused option without visiting an airport carrier counter
Check Current Airalo South Korea eSIM Plans
Yesim
Yesim currently offers South Korea data-only eSIM plans with fixed-data and unlimited options.
Its current South Korea product also supports hotspot use, and the validity period begins when the eSIM connects to a compatible network.
It can be worth comparing if:
- you want to compare larger fixed-data packages
- hotspot use matters to you
- you prefer an online data-only setup
- you want another option before choosing Airalo or a Korean carrier product
Check Current Yesim South Korea eSIM Plans
Which One Should You Choose?
Do not choose Airalo or Yesim only because one shows a lower headline price on a particular day.
Compare:
- total data allowance
- unlimited-plan fair-use or speed rules
- validity period
- activation timing
- hotspot support
- current checkout price
- refund conditions
- device compatibility
If you need a Korean 010 number, local calls, SMS, or carrier-counter support, keep reading the KT, SK Telecom, and LG U+ comparison below instead.

What Is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM profile installed directly on a compatible device instead of inserting a removable plastic SIM card.
The normal process is simple:
- Buy an eSIM.
- Receive a QR code or installation information.
- Add the mobile plan to your phone.
- Select the Korean eSIM for mobile data.
- Start the service according to the carrier’s activation rules.
The Korea Tourism Organization’s communications guide also explains that travelers can purchase prepaid eSIM service online and install the digital plan using a QR code.
The main advantage for travelers is convenience.
You can keep your physical home SIM installed while adding a Korean mobile line to a compatible phone.
KT vs SKT vs LG U+: Which Is Best?
KT, SK Telecom, and LG U+ are Korea’s three major mobile network operators, and all provide services aimed at international visitors.
There is no universal winner.
| Carrier | Main Reason to Consider It |
|---|---|
| KT | Major network, tourist eSIM options and airport support |
| SK Telecom | Clear tourist Data and Data/Call/SMS products with published pricing |
| LG U+ | Clear online Data eSIM rules, first-data-use activation and no routine speed cap on its current Data eSIM |
The better question is not:
“Which Korean carrier is best?”
It is:
“Which exact product matches the way I will use my phone?”
Compare activation timing, phone features, speed policy, purchase channel, verification requirements, and price before choosing.
Current Korea eSIM Price Snapshot
Prices and promotions can change at any time.
The products below are also not necessarily identical plan types, so this table should be used as a reference rather than a direct price-only ranking.
| Validity | KT | SK Telecom | LG U+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days | Check current checkout | ₩18,000 | ₩18,000 |
| 5 days | Check current checkout | ₩27,500 | ₩27,500 |
| 7 days | Check current checkout | ₩35,000 | Check current checkout |
| 10 days | Check current checkout | ₩38,500 | Check current checkout |
| 30 days | Check current checkout | ₩71,500 | Check current checkout |
The SK Telecom prices above are currently published for its Data, Call and SMS eSIM.
The LG U+ three- and five-day examples above are currently published for its Data eSIM.
Because product type matters, a similar headline price does not mean the plans are identical.
Before paying, compare:
- total checkout price
- data speed policy
- Data vs Voice/SMS features
- activation timing
- validity
- passport requirements
- refund rules
- whether the eSIM can be reinstalled
SK Telecom eSIM for Tourists
The official SK Telecom tourist eSIM page currently offers products including:
- eSIM (Data)
- eSIM (Data, Call, SMS)
Its Data, Call and SMS product currently provides unlimited LTE data during the service period at speeds of up to 100Mbps.
For that product, incoming domestic calls and texts are available without an additional usage charge after the required passport-information verification.
Outgoing calls and texts require a prepaid balance.
Current published Data, Call and SMS prices include:
- 2 days: ₩12,000
- 3 days: ₩18,000
- 5 days: ₩27,500
- 7 days: ₩35,000
- 10 days: ₩38,500
- 30 days: ₩71,500
Longer plans are also offered.
Important: Do Not Scan the SKT QR Code Too Early
This is one of the easiest Korea eSIM mistakes to make.
SK Telecom currently states that its tourist eSIM service period is calculated in 24-hour increments from the moment you scan the eSIM QR code on your phone.
So if you scan a five-day eSIM before leaving home, part of your 120-hour service period can be used before you even arrive in Korea.
Buy it early if you want, but do not scan the SKT QR code until you are ready for the validity clock to start.
SKT Passport Verification
SK Telecom allows mobile data to work before passport-information verification.
However, phone and SMS functions on applicable products require passport verification.
SKT currently provides an online passport-verification process during specified hours, while airport roaming centers can assist as well.
The carrier also states that its tourist service cannot be used for personal authentication services, and payment-related text-message receipt is restricted.
That distinction is important:
Receiving a Korean number or ordinary text messages does not turn a tourist eSIM into a Korean resident mobile contract.
KT eSIM for Tourists
KT’s official tourist eSIM service is also designed for short-term international visitors.
KT currently offers several tourist-oriented product categories, including Data and products with additional voice or travel functions.
Its official guidance states that tourist eSIM numbers begin with 010.
However, that does not mean every product provides the same outgoing call and SMS features.
Check the exact product before purchasing.
KT Data Speed Policy
KT’s current tourist guidance describes an unlimited-data structure with a daily high-speed allowance.
It currently states that after 11GB of daily data has been used, data can continue at speeds of up to 5Mbps, with the high-speed allowance resetting at midnight.
That is still a large daily allowance for most travelers, but it is different from saying there is never a speed change.
KT Activation Timing
KT’s current eSIM instructions state that the service period is calculated in 24-hour units from the point the eSIM installation is completed.
This means KT and LG U+ should not be treated as if they have the same activation rule.
Do not install a short KT plan days before departure without first considering when you want its usage period to begin.
KT Voice and SMS
KT’s current tourist guidance distinguishes data-focused service from products that support outgoing calls and texts.
Applicable phone functions require identity or entry verification.
If outgoing voice/SMS is important, check whether the exact product can be purchased online or requires airport processing.
KT and Korean Identity Verification
KT explicitly warns that its tourist SIM/eSIM service cannot be used for normal Korean personal authentication.
That remains true even if the service is assigned an 010 number.
A tourist 010 number and Korean resident-level identity verification are different things.
LG U+ eSIM for Tourists
The official LG U+ Korea eSIM page currently offers a Data eSIM with:
- unlimited 5G/LTE data across South Korea
- online purchase
- QR-code installation
- activation based on first data usage
Current published prices include:
- 1 day: ₩6,500
- 2 days: ₩12,000
- 3 days: ₩18,000
- 4 days: ₩23,000
- 5 days: ₩27,500
Longer options can be checked through the current product selector.
LG U+ Data Speed Policy
LG U+ currently describes its Data eSIM as:
No Speed Cap, Truly Unlimited Data
Its official page also says unlimited data is provided without routine speed limits or throttling.
However, LG U+ separately notes that network speed may be managed during periods of excessive congestion.
So the current Data eSIM is not accurately described as a daily 3GB plan followed by 5Mbps.
Always check the live product terms before purchase because carrier policies can change.
When Does LG U+ eSIM Start?
LG U+ currently states that its usage period begins with the first use of mobile data.
That makes its current activation rule different from SKT’s QR-scan rule and KT’s installation-based rule.
For example, if you install the LG U+ Data eSIM before departure but do not use its mobile data until after arriving in Korea, the usage period currently begins from that first data session.
LG U+ Data Only vs Data + Voice
LG U+ currently distinguishes the sales channels clearly.
Data Only → Online & Airport
Data + Voice → Airport Only
So if you need outgoing calls or text messages, do not assume you can buy every LG U+ voice-enabled option through an instant online checkout.
Check the current product and pickup requirements before your flight.
Do Not Delete an LG U+ eSIM
LG U+ currently states that once an eSIM has been activated on a device, it cannot be reinstalled or reissued after deletion.
If something is not working, do not immediately remove the mobile plan.
Troubleshoot the connection or contact LG U+ support first.
Data Only vs a Korean Phone Number
For most travelers, this is the real decision.
A Data-Focused eSIM Is Usually Enough If You Need:
- Naver Map
- KakaoMap
- Google Maps
- translation apps
- KakaoTalk
- social media
- mobile tickets
- hotel reservations
- normal web browsing
You can often keep your home SIM active for important messages while using the Korean eSIM for data if your phone supports dual-SIM operation.
Consider Voice/SMS Features If You Need:
- outgoing Korean phone calls
- incoming local calls
- Korean SMS
- local contact information for reservations
- certain simple text-code functions
But do not choose based only on the words “Korean number.”
Check exactly what the carrier allows that number to do.
Does a Korea Tourist eSIM Give You a 010 Number?
Some do.
But you should not assume every eSIM product works the same way.
KT currently states that its tourist eSIM numbers start with 010.
SK Telecom provides phone and text functionality under its applicable tourist eSIM conditions.
LG U+ also offers products with phone functionality, although its current Data + Voice sales channel differs from Data Only.
If the number itself matters to you, confirm these four things before paying:
- Is a Korean number included?
- Can it receive calls?
- Can it receive SMS?
- Can it make outgoing calls or send texts?
Those are separate questions.
Can You Use a Tourist eSIM for Korean Identity Verification?
Usually not for full Korean identity verification.
This is one of the most important distinctions for international visitors.
010 number ≠ full Korean identity verification
| What You Need | What a Tourist eSIM May Provide | Important Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Maps, messaging and web | Data service | Korean number usually unnecessary |
| Incoming calls or SMS | Possible on qualifying plans | Carrier rules differ |
| Simple SMS codes for some travel services | May work on some voice/SMS products | Not guaranteed for every app |
| Banking or government authentication | Do not rely on it | Tourist line is not a resident contract |
| Payment-related verification messages | Do not assume support | SKT explicitly lists restrictions |
Simple SMS Verification
Some apps simply send a numerical code to a phone number.
LG U+ currently states that its applicable Voice/SMS service can support SMS verification for some restaurant and taxi reservation apps.
However, its Data-only service does not support SMS verification.
Formal Identity Verification
This is different.
Formal Korean identity verification is used for services such as:
- banking
- government systems
- some financial products
- resident-only platforms
- services connected to Korean resident identity information
LG U+ explicitly says its tourist service does not support banking or government identity verification.
KT says its tourist service cannot be used for normal personal authentication.
SK Telecom also states that personal-authentication services are unavailable on its tourist eSIM and warns about payment-related text-message limitations.
A Korean tourist number may still be useful.
It simply is not equivalent to a resident mobile subscription.

Do You Need a Korean Number for Restaurants?
Not always.
Many restaurants used by international travelers can be booked directly, through hotels, or through platforms that do not require a Korean resident mobile account.
A Korean number can still be useful for:
- reservation contact
- waiting-list messages
- local calls
- certain simple SMS codes
LG U+ specifically notes that qualifying Voice/SMS service can support SMS verification for some restaurant and taxi reservation apps.
But no tourist eSIM should be assumed to unlock every Korean reservation platform.
Check Your Phone Before Buying
Do this before paying for any eSIM.
1. Confirm That Your Phone Supports eSIM
Look in your phone’s cellular or SIM settings for an option such as:
Add eSIM
Another common check is:
*#06#
If an EID appears, that generally indicates eSIM hardware support.
However, a phone having eSIM hardware does not guarantee compatibility with every Korean network.
Check the carrier’s current compatibility information too.
2. Make Sure Your Phone Is Unlocked
A carrier-locked device may reject a Korean eSIM even when the hardware supports it.
If your phone was purchased through a mobile-carrier contract, check its lock status before traveling.
3. Check Your Dual-SIM Settings
If you plan to keep your home SIM switched on:
- set the Korean eSIM as your mobile-data line
- decide which SIM should handle calls and texts
- prevent your home SIM from using unwanted roaming data
- check whether automatic cellular-data switching is enabled
A few minutes of setup can prevent an expensive roaming surprise.
Buying, Installing and Starting Service Are Not the Same Thing
This difference matters.
SK Telecom: current tourist eSIM terms calculate the validity period from the moment you scan the QR code.
KT: current tourist guidance calculates the service period in 24-hour units from completion of eSIM installation.
LG U+: the current Data eSIM service period begins when mobile data is first used.
That means the safest installation advice is carrier-specific.
Do not scan or install an eSIM early just because another provider allows it.
Before You Scan the QR Code
Prepare first.
- Make sure you have stable Wi-Fi or another internet connection.
- Save the installation instructions somewhere you can access offline.
- Display the QR code on another phone, tablet, computer, or printed page if necessary.
- Read the carrier’s activation rule before scanning.
- Do not delete the eSIM simply because it fails to connect immediately.
- Contact support before removing an installed profile.
- Delete the profile only when you are finished with the service.
For SKT in particular, scanning can start the validity clock.
For LG U+, deleting an activated profile can make reinstallation or reissue impossible.
What If You Delete the eSIM?
You may have to buy another one.
LG U+ explicitly states that an activated eSIM cannot be reinstalled or reissued after deletion.
SK Telecom similarly warns that manually deleting an active eSIM profile makes that profile unusable and a new eSIM may be required.
KT states that its QR code is single-use and warns users not to delete the installed eSIM.
The safest approach is simple:
Never delete a Korea eSIM as your first troubleshooting step.
eSIM vs Physical SIM at Incheon Airport
eSIM Advantages
- purchase before arrival
- no physical SIM swap
- keep your home SIM installed
- easier dual-SIM setup
- potentially avoid a counter queue
Physical SIM / Airport Counter Advantages
- staff can help with setup
- useful for phones without eSIM
- easier troubleshooting if something fails
- some phone-enabled products require airport processing
- passport or entry verification can be handled in person
If you only need data and are comfortable with phone settings, eSIM is usually more convenient.
If you need specific voice/SMS functionality or want staff support, an airport carrier counter can still make sense.
Should You Buy Your eSIM at Incheon Airport?
You generally do not need to wait until arrival to buy a simple online data product.
But an airport counter can be useful when:
- the eSIM will not activate
- your phone does not recognize the profile
- you need in-person verification
- you want a product sold only at the airport
- you need help with voice/SMS setup
Once your phone is connected, your next task is usually getting into the city.
See our Incheon Airport to Seoul 2026 Transport Guide for AREX, airport buses, taxis, and late-night options.
Is “Unlimited Data” the Same on Every Carrier?
No.
The word unlimited does not automatically mean identical performance.
Current carrier policies differ.
SK Telecom: its tourist eSIM pages currently advertise unlimited data at speeds up to 100Mbps for the relevant products.
KT: current tourist guidance describes a daily 11GB high-speed allowance followed by continued use at up to 5Mbps.
LG U+: its current Data eSIM page advertises unlimited data without a routine speed cap or throttling, while reserving the right to manage speed during excessive congestion.
Do not compare only the word “unlimited.”
Compare the policy behind it.
Is 5G Necessary for Korea Travel?
Usually not.
For a typical tourist using:
- maps
- translation
- messaging
- restaurant searches
- ticket apps
- social media
- regular video
a stable LTE connection is normally more than enough.
Do not choose a plan solely because it says 5G.
Activation rules, price, voice/SMS support, and speed after any high-speed allowance may matter more.
Can You Use Hotspot or Tethering?
Hotspot policies can differ by product.
LG U+ currently states that smartphone tethering can be used with its eSIM or SIM service, although performance can depend on the device.
If hotspot use is essential—for example, if you plan to work on a laptop—confirm the current terms of the exact KT or SKT product before purchase as well.
eSIM vs Pocket Wi-Fi
An eSIM usually makes more sense if:
- one traveler mainly needs data
- your phone supports eSIM
- you do not want to carry another device
- you do not want another battery to charge
- you want connectivity directly on your phone
Pocket Wi-Fi can still make sense if:
- several travelers will stay together
- multiple devices need one connection
- one or more phones cannot use eSIM
The trade-off is that everyone becomes dependent on one router and its battery.
An eSIM Does Not Replace T-money
Your eSIM handles mobile connectivity.
It does not automatically replace your transportation card.
If you also want a Korean prepaid payment card with a built-in T-money function, see our WOWPASS Korea 2026 guide.
If you expect many eligible subway and bus rides in Seoul, you can also compare your transportation strategy with our Seoul Climate Card 2026 Tourist Pass Guide.
Think of the setup as separate tools:
eSIM → connectivity
T-money / Climate Card → transportation
WOWPASS → prepaid payments plus a separate built-in T-money balance
Which Korea eSIM Should You Choose?
Choose a Simple Data Product If:
You mainly need internet for navigation, messaging, translation, bookings, and social media.
This is the simplest choice for many tourists.
If you prefer an online travel eSIM instead of buying directly from a Korean carrier, compare Airalo and Yesim before choosing.
Consider SK Telecom If:
You want clearly published tourist pricing, unlimited data with a current maximum speed of up to 100Mbps, or its Data/Call/SMS option.
Just remember that the validity clock currently begins when you scan the QR code.
Consider KT If:
You want a major Korean carrier with tourist eSIM products and airport support.
Its current service uses a large daily high-speed allowance before a lower-speed unlimited tier, but its installation timing deserves attention because the service period is calculated from installation completion.
Consider LG U+ If:
You want a Data eSIM that currently starts its usage period with first data use and is advertised without a routine speed cap.
It can be particularly straightforward for data-focused travelers.
If you require Data + Voice, however, check the current airport-only purchase requirement.
Do Not Choose Based Only on the Carrier Name
All three are major Korean mobile operators.
For a tourist, the exact product conditions are usually more important than brand loyalty.
Common Korea eSIM Mistakes
Buying Before Checking Compatibility
Confirm eSIM support and carrier-unlock status first.
Assuming Every eSIM Has the Same Activation Rule
SKT, KT and LG U+ currently use different start conditions.
Scanning an SKT QR Code Too Early
The current service clock starts at the QR-scan point.
Installing KT Too Early
KT currently calculates use in 24-hour periods from installation completion.
Assuming Every Korean Number Supports Identity Verification
It does not.
Assuming “Unlimited” Means the Same Speed Policy
It does not.
Deleting the eSIM While Troubleshooting
You may lose the profile permanently.
Forgetting About Your Home SIM’s Data Roaming
This can lead to unexpected roaming charges.
Buying Voice/SMS Without Checking the Sales Channel
Some products require airport or in-person processing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best eSIM for Korea in 2026?
There is no single best option.
For most travelers, start by deciding whether you need only data or also Korean phone functions, then compare activation timing, speed policy and price.
Does every Korea eSIM include a Korean number?
No.
Features vary by product.
Check the specific product if a Korean 010 number, calls or SMS matter to you.
Can I use a Korean tourist number for identity verification?
Do not rely on it for formal Korean identity verification.
KT, SKT and LG U+ all publish important restrictions in this area.
Can I receive restaurant or taxi verification texts?
Some qualifying Voice/SMS products may support simple SMS verification for certain travel services.
LG U+ specifically mentions some restaurant and taxi reservation apps.
This is not the same as universal identity verification.
Can I use a tourist eSIM for banking or government verification?
Do not expect it to work.
Tourist prepaid mobile products are not equivalent to resident mobile subscriptions.
Can I delete and reinstall my eSIM?
Do not assume so.
The major-carrier tourist services contain important restrictions on deleted profiles and QR reuse.
Contact the carrier before deleting an eSIM that is not working.
Do I need a Korean phone number for a normal vacation?
Often, no.
If your trip mainly involves maps, messaging, translation, tickets, hotel bookings and web access, data may be all you need.
Before You Buy
Check these seven things:
- Does my phone support eSIM?
- Is my phone carrier-unlocked?
- Do I need data only, or actual call/SMS functions?
- What event starts the validity clock?
- What does “unlimited” mean on this exact plan?
- What verification can the Korean number actually perform?
- What happens if I delete the eSIM?
For most short-term visitors, the simplest product that reliably gives you mobile data is often the best choice.
If you need calls or texts, choose a product that explicitly provides those features.
And remember the most important rule:
A Korean 010 number does not automatically give a tourist full Korean identity verification.
If you are still preparing the immigration side of your trip as well, see our Korea e-Arrival Card 2026 guide before you fly.
