Choosing where to stay in Seoul can affect your trip more than choosing between two hotels with similar review scores.
Seoul is huge, and the best neighborhood depends on what you want to do after breakfast, how late you stay out, how often you plan to cross the city, and how convenient you want your airport journey to be.
For many first-time visitors, Myeongdong is the easiest all-around starting point — not because it is objectively best for every travel style, but because it balances sightseeing access, shopping, food, hotels, and transportation.
Hongdae can be better for nightlife and airport-rail convenience. Jongno and Insadong are stronger for historic Seoul. Gangnam suits travelers focused on modern Seoul and southern districts. Seongsu works for trend-focused visitors, while Jamsil is often the clearest choice for families planning around Lotte World.
This guide compares the areas first — before you choose a specific hotel.
Quick Answer: Best Areas to Stay in Seoul
| Area | Best For | Main Strength | Main Trade-Off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Myeongdong | First-time visitors | Balanced sightseeing, shopping and transport | Busy and tourist-oriented |
| Hongdae | Younger travelers, nightlife | Nightlife, cafés, airport-rail access | Less convenient for the palace area |
| Jongno & Insadong | Culture and history | Palaces, hanok areas, traditional Seoul | Quieter at night |
| Gangnam | Shopping, business, modern Seoul | Southern Seoul and modern city life | Farther from many historic sights |
| Seongsu | Cafés, fashion, pop-ups | Trendy, constantly changing atmosphere | Less efficient for classic first-trip sightseeing |
| Jamsil | Families, Lotte World | Theme parks and family attractions | Farther east from the historic center |
If this is your first Seoul trip and you still cannot decide, Myeongdong is a sensible place to start your comparison.

1. Myeongdong — Best All-Around Starting Point for Many First-Time Visitors
Best for: first trips, shopping, sightseeing, short stays
Myeongdong is one of the easiest areas to recommend when a first-time visitor wants a practical base rather than a highly specialized neighborhood.
The official Visit Seoul guide to Myeongdong describes it as one of Seoul’s major shopping and tourism districts, with fashion, cosmetics, food, commerce, and culture concentrated in the area.
Myeongdong Station is on Subway Line 4.
Depending on your exact hotel location, Euljiro 1-ga Station on Line 2 may also be within walking distance.
Check the actual hotel map pin rather than assuming every Myeongdong hotel is equally close to both subway lines.
Why Stay in Myeongdong?
Myeongdong works well when your first Seoul itinerary is spread across several parts of the central city.
Popular areas and attractions that are relatively convenient from this part of Seoul include:
- Namsan and N Seoul Tower
- Namdaemun
- City Hall
- Gwanghwamun
- Jongno
- Dongdaemun
- Seoul Station
There is also a large concentration of accommodation aimed at international visitors. The official Visit Seoul accommodation directory lists Myeongdong as one of its main hotel-search areas.
You can spend the day exploring historic or modern Seoul and still return to an area with plenty of restaurants, shops, and activity around the hotel.
Downsides of Myeongdong
Myeongdong is convenient, but it is not necessarily the most distinctive neighborhood experience.
Expect:
- Heavy tourist traffic
- Busy shopping streets
- Strong demand for well-located hotels
- Less late-night youth culture than Hongdae
- Less neighborhood-style café exploration than Seongsu
If you want the area surrounding your hotel to be one of the most trend-focused parts of your trip, Myeongdong may feel more practical than exciting.
Myeongdong Verdict
Choose Myeongdong if this is your first Seoul trip and convenience matters more than having a highly specific neighborhood personality.
2. Hongdae — Best for Nightlife, Cafés and a Younger Atmosphere
Best for: younger travelers, nightlife, solo travelers, cafés
Hongdae feels very different from central Myeongdong.
The official Visit Seoul Hongdae guide describes the district as a major center of Korean pop and indie culture, music, art, and nighttime activity.
Around Hongik University Station, Yeonnam-dong, Hapjeong, and Sangsu, travelers can find a dense mix of:
- Cafés
- Restaurants
- Bars
- Clubs
- Shopping
- Street performances
- Late-night food
Hongik University Station is also served by the Airport Railroad All-Stop Train, making Hongdae particularly convenient for travelers who value a direct rail connection to Incheon Airport.
If airport transportation is important to your hotel decision, compare the actual options in our Incheon Airport to Seoul 2026 transport guide before booking.
Why Stay in Hongdae?
Hongdae is a strong choice if you want to leave your hotel at 9 p.m. and still have a large amount to do within the neighborhood.
It is also useful for solo travelers who prefer staying somewhere busy rather than returning each evening to a quiet business district.
The area works particularly well when restaurants, nightlife, cafés, music, shopping, and street atmosphere are significant parts of the trip.
Downsides of Hongdae
Hongdae is west of Seoul’s main historic sightseeing core.
If your itinerary is dominated by:
- Gyeongbokgung Palace
- Changdeokgung Palace
- Bukchon
- Gwanghwamun
- Insadong
- Traditional central Seoul
you may spend more time crossing the city than someone staying around Jongno or Myeongdong.
Some sections of Hongdae can also remain noisy well into the night.
Do not book a hotel based only on the word “Hongdae.” Check its exact map location and walking distance from the station.
Hongdae Verdict
Choose Hongdae if nightlife, cafés, a younger atmosphere, and airport-rail convenience matter more than being closest to Seoul’s historic core.
3. Jongno & Insadong — Best for Palaces and Traditional Seoul
Best for: history, culture, palace sightseeing, quieter evenings
If the Seoul you most want to experience is built around palaces, hanok streets, traditional tea houses, museums, and older neighborhoods, Jongno and Insadong can be a better base than either Myeongdong or Hongdae.
The official Visit Seoul guide to Insadong highlights the area’s traditional atmosphere, wooden tea houses, galleries, cultural shops, and street life.
Depending on the exact hotel, useful stations may include:
- Anguk
- Jongno 3-ga
- Jonggak
- Gwanghwamun
Why Stay in Jongno or Insadong?
This part of Seoul works especially well when your itinerary includes:
- Gyeongbokgung Palace
- Changdeokgung Palace
- Bukchon Hanok Village
- Insadong
- Gwanghwamun
- Cheonggyecheon
- Ikseon-dong
Depending on your exact hotel, you may be able to walk to several major sights rather than beginning every sightseeing day with a longer subway journey.
Downsides
The area is generally calmer at night than Hongdae or central Gangnam.
That can be an advantage after a long day, but travelers looking for clubs or intense late-night activity may prefer another district.
Jongno & Insadong Verdict
Choose Jongno or Insadong if historic Seoul is the main reason for your trip.
4. Gangnam — Best for Modern Seoul, Business and Southern Districts
Best for: business travelers, shopping, nightlife, modern Seoul
Gangnam can be an excellent base, but it should not automatically be your first choice simply because the name is famous.
The official Visit Seoul information for the Gangnam Station area places the neighborhood in one of Seoul’s major shopping and commercial districts. Gangnam Station is served by Subway Line 2 and the Shinbundang Line.
Gangnam is a logical base for travelers interested in areas such as:
- Gangnam Station
- COEX and Samseong
- Apgujeong
- Cheongdam
- Sinsa
- Southern Seoul business districts
- Modern shopping and nightlife
Why Stay in Gangnam?
Stay here if your itinerary is already weighted toward southern Seoul.
It can also be practical for business travelers whose meetings or events are concentrated around Gangnam, Seocho, Samseong, or nearby districts.
The Big Trade-Off
Gangnam is not particularly close to Seoul’s palace district.
If your first-trip sightseeing list is mainly Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Insadong, Myeongdong, and other parts of central historic Seoul, choosing Gangnam can mean more cross-city travel.
Gangnam Verdict
Choose Gangnam because your itinerary is in Gangnam — not simply because Gangnam is famous.
If Gangnam is the right base for your trip, use our Best Hotels in Gangnam Seoul 2026 guide to choose between Gangnam Station, COEX, Teheran-ro/Yeoksam, and Apgujeong before comparing individual hotels.
5. Seongsu — Best for Cafés, Fashion, K-Beauty and Pop-Ups
Best for: trend-focused travelers, repeat visitors, cafés, fashion, K-beauty
Seongsu has become one of Seoul’s most influential lifestyle neighborhoods.
In its August 2026 guide to Seongsu, Visit Seoul describes a former factory and workshop district that now combines cafés, flagship stores, K-beauty experiences, boutiques, galleries, immersive retail, and temporary pop-ups.
Unlike a district defined mainly by permanent landmarks, Seongsu changes constantly.
Why Stay in Seongsu?
Seongsu makes sense if visiting cafés, fashion spaces, K-beauty flagships, and temporary retail experiences is not just one afternoon activity but a major reason for your trip.
Staying nearby can let you experience the neighborhood more slowly instead of commuting there for only a few hours.
Because pop-ups, flagship experiences, and branded spaces change constantly, Seongsu is particularly good for travelers who enjoy exploring and discovering what is new rather than following a fixed checklist of permanent attractions.
Why It Is Not My First Recommendation for Most First-Timers
A classic first Seoul itinerary is usually spread across central and northern Seoul.
Seongsu can work as a base, but choosing it generally means prioritizing neighborhood atmosphere over maximum sightseeing efficiency.
Seongsu Verdict
Choose Seongsu because you specifically want to experience current Seoul trends, cafés, fashion, beauty, and constantly changing pop-ups.
6. Jamsil — Best for Families and Lotte World
Best for: families, theme parks, Jamsil-focused itineraries
Jamsil is one of the clearest specialist choices.
The official Visit Seoul guide to Lotte World Tower places Lotte World Tower, Seoul Sky, the aquarium, shopping, and other major attractions in the Jamsil area.
Jamsil Station is served by Subway Lines 2 and 8.
Why Stay in Jamsil?
Families planning multiple activities around Lotte World can reduce unnecessary commuting by staying nearby.
The area is especially useful if your itinerary includes:
- Lotte World
- Lotte World Tower
- Seoul Sky
- Lotte World Aquarium
- Seokchon Lake
- Olympic Park
- Other Songpa-area activities
Downsides
Jamsil sits east of Seoul’s main historic sightseeing area.
If most of your trip revolves around palaces, Bukchon, Myeongdong, Hongdae, and western Seoul, you may spend more time traveling across the city.
Jamsil Verdict
Choose Jamsil when Lotte World, family attractions, or the Songpa area are major parts of your itinerary.
If Lotte World is the main reason you are choosing Jamsil, compare the best hotels near Lotte World Seoul by park convenience, family fit, luxury, value, and real walking distance before you book.
What About Seoul Station?
Seoul Station deserves a separate mention.
It is less about neighborhood atmosphere and more about transportation convenience.
Seoul Station is useful for travelers who value Airport Railroad and major intercity rail connections, particularly if they have heavy luggage, an early train, or plans to continue to another Korean city.
Its City Airport Terminal can also be convenient for some departing travelers, but not everyone staying near Seoul Station is eligible to use it.
According to Incheon International Airport’s official City Airport Terminal guidance, the Seoul Station facility is available to eligible passengers who:
- Use the AREX Express Train from Seoul Station
- Depart internationally from Incheon Airport on the same day
- Fly with an airline supported by the Seoul Station City Airport Terminal
Airline participation must be checked separately.
The current official check-in and baggage-drop hours at Seoul Station are 05:20–19:00.
Current deadlines are:
- Terminal 1: 3 hours before departure
- Terminal 2: 3 hours 20 minutes before departure
These conditions can change, so check your airline eligibility and current deadline before choosing a hotel primarily because of the City Airport Terminal.
If you:
- Have an early intercity train
- Have heavy luggage
- Want convenient Airport Railroad access
- Plan to use Seoul as a base for rail trips
then staying near Seoul Station can be very practical.
For a typical first-time sightseeing trip, however, I would usually start by comparing nearby Myeongdong unless transportation logistics are the main priority.
For airport transport options beyond the City Airport Terminal, see our Incheon Airport to Seoul 2026 transport guide.
Myeongdong vs Hongdae vs Gangnam
These are three of the most common areas first-time visitors compare.
| Question | Myeongdong | Hongdae | Gangnam |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy all-around first-trip base | Excellent | Good | Itinerary-dependent |
| Historic sightseeing access | Good | Fair | Less convenient |
| Nightlife | Good | Excellent | Very good |
| Shopping | Excellent | Excellent | Excellent |
| Youthful café culture | Good | Excellent | Good |
| Airport-rail convenience | Good, depending on route | Excellent | Less direct |
| Modern Seoul | Good | Good | Excellent |
| Strong choice for a short first trip | Yes | Yes, if lifestyle-focused | Only if itinerary fits |
Choose Myeongdong If…
You want the easiest all-around starting point and do not yet have a neighborhood-specific reason to stay elsewhere.
Choose Hongdae If…
You care more about nightlife, cafés, airport-rail convenience, and the atmosphere around your hotel.
Choose Gangnam If…
Most of the places you actually plan to visit are already south of the Han River.

| Trend and K-beauty-focused repeat visitor | Seongsu |
| Family visiting Lotte World | Jamsil |
| Heavy luggage / rail connections | Seoul Station area |

How to Choose Your Hotel Within the Neighborhood
Choosing the right district is only half the decision.
A badly located hotel in a good neighborhood can still make your trip inconvenient.
Before booking, check these six things.
1. Walking Distance to the Subway
Do not rely only on the neighborhood name.
A hotel marketed as being in “Myeongdong” or “Hongdae” can still be a meaningful walk from the station you actually want to use.
For many city trips, being several minutes closer to a useful subway station can matter more than having a slightly larger room.
2. Which Subway Line You Will Actually Use
Look at your itinerary before booking.
If most of your planned activities sit along one or two subway corridors, a hotel with convenient access to those lines can reduce unnecessary transfers.
If you expect heavy public-transport use during a short Seoul stay, compare the current tourist transit options in our Seoul Climate Card 2026 guide.
3. Airport Arrival and Departure
Your ideal hotel area may change if your flight arrives late at night or leaves early in the morning.
Before paying for a non-refundable room, check how you will travel between Incheon Airport and that exact neighborhood while carrying luggage.
Our Incheon Airport to Seoul 2026 transport guide compares AREX, airport buses, taxis, and late-night options.
4. Cancellation Rules
Do not compare hotels using the headline nightly rate alone.
Check:
- Free-cancellation deadline
- Prepayment requirements
- Refundability
- Taxes and fees
- Breakfast inclusion
- Room occupancy limits
- Extra-bed conditions
A slightly more expensive flexible booking can sometimes be more useful than locking yourself into a cheaper non-refundable rate months before your trip.
5. Room Size and Luggage Space
Seoul hotel rooms can vary significantly in size.
If you are traveling with two large suitcases, compare the actual room area and layout — not just the star rating or bed type.
6. Check the Actual Walk From the Station
“Five minutes from the subway” does not always mean an easy five-minute walk.
Before booking, check whether the route includes:
- Steep hills
- Long stairways
- Large intersections
- Underground passages
- Station exits without convenient elevators or escalators
This matters especially if you are traveling with large luggage, a stroller, or mobility limitations.
Check the actual route between the station exit and the hotel rather than relying only on the advertised walking time.

Common Hotel-Location Mistakes
Booking Gangnam Just Because You Know the Name
Gangnam is an excellent area when your itinerary fits it.
It is less efficient when almost every attraction you saved is north of the Han River.
Choosing the Cheapest Hotel Without Checking the Station
Saving a small amount per night can become frustrating if you repeatedly walk a difficult route with luggage or make unnecessary transfers every day.
Treating All of Hongdae as the Same Location
Hongdae, Yeonnam, Hapjeong, and surrounding areas can differ in nightlife, noise, atmosphere, and station convenience.
Check the exact map pin.
Assuming “Central Seoul” Means Everything Is Walkable
Seoul is too large for one hotel to be within walking distance of everything.
The goal is not to eliminate transportation.
The goal is to reduce unnecessary transportation.
Ignoring Hills, Stairs and Station Exits
Two hotels can both claim to be five minutes from a station while offering very different real-world walking experiences.
This becomes much more important when carrying luggage or traveling with children.
How I Would Choose for a First Seoul Trip
For a simple first-time itinerary, I would use this rule:
Start by comparing Myeongdong.
Choose Hongdae instead if nightlife, cafés, airport access, and the neighborhood around your hotel matter more than palace proximity.
Choose Jongno or Insadong if historic Seoul is at the center of the trip.
Choose Gangnam when your actual itinerary is concentrated in southern Seoul.
Choose Seongsu because you specifically want Seongsu’s evolving café, fashion, beauty, and pop-up culture.
Choose Jamsil because Lotte World, family attractions, or Songpa are major priorities.
Choose Seoul Station when transportation logistics outweigh neighborhood atmosphere.
The best hotel district is the one that puts you near the places you already plan to visit — not the neighborhood with the most famous name.
If a DMZ day trip is part of your Seoul itinerary, check whether your preferred tour uses a central meeting point or selected-hotel pickup before finalizing your base. Our Best DMZ Tours from Seoul 2026 guide compares standard, small-group pickup, and private options so you can decide how much that convenience is actually worth.
If a winter ski day is part of your itinerary, meeting-point convenience can matter too. Compare the resort and pickup trade-offs in our Best Korea Ski Tours from Seoul 2026–2027 guide before choosing between otherwise similar hotels.
Before You Book
Before paying for a hotel:
- Pin every major attraction on your itinerary.
- See which side of Seoul contains most of them.
- Check the nearest useful subway station to the hotel.
- Check the actual walking route for hills, stairs, intersections, and luggage accessibility.
- Check your airport route while imagining that you are carrying your luggage.
- Compare the actual cancellation policy.
- Check room size and occupancy rules.
- Compare the final price, not just the headline nightly rate.
You can also browse accommodation by district through the official Visit Seoul accommodation directory.
Final Verdict
For many first-time visitors, Myeongdong is the easiest all-around starting point in Seoul in 2026.
That does not make it objectively better than every other neighborhood.
It is simply an area that tends to create relatively few compromises for a typical first-time itinerary built around central sightseeing, shopping, food, hotels, and transportation.
Choose Hongdae for nightlife, cafés, a younger atmosphere, and Airport Railroad convenience.
Choose Jongno or Insadong for palaces and traditional Seoul.
Choose Gangnam for modern Seoul, business, and southern districts.
Choose Seongsu for cafés, fashion, K-beauty, pop-ups, and a neighborhood that rewards exploration.
Choose Jamsil for families and Lotte World.
Choose Seoul Station when rail and airport logistics matter more than neighborhood atmosphere.
Do not book a neighborhood because someone says it is “the best.”
Build your itinerary first. Then choose the part of Seoul that makes that itinerary easier.
